Moving Internationally - Part 2

Having just purchased a home in Minnesota, I have been living for the past three weeks with the things that need to be accomplished. I already had a US bank account, so that’s not on the list. But these items are:

  • Buying the home

  • Setting up electrical, water, and gas service

  • Homeowner’s insurance

  • Buying a car

  • Automobile insurance

  • Driver’s License

  • Telecommunications: Internet and TV

  • Medical insurance

  • Furniture

  • Homeowner’s Association fees

All the while I had to feed myself.

And now I am back in Munich where I have to:

  • Sell my home

  • Sell my car

  • Sell the furniture I am not taking with

  • Contract to have shipped the things I want to take with

  • Cancel insurances, telephone, and Internet service

  • The German Abmeldung

And I am moving as a single person without the needs of a family. For many years I have been advising people who are making such a move. It is quite a task. And I am very familiar with the place I am leaving as well as the new home area.

If you are making such a move, make sure your employer gives you time to do the things you need to get done. Good luck!

By the way, this blog may not have new posts as regularly for a while while I complete my move.
