Leadership Communication

I have never met Gregg Thompson, President of Bluepoint Leadership Development, but I would like to. When he talks about leadership, I find myself nodding a lot and getting excited that he speaks for me as well.

From time to time Gregg produces short videos which can be viewed on YouTube, like one entitled “The Leader Speaks”. He raised some interesting questions – and proceeded to give answers that aligned with my experience:

  • Is communication a competency?
  • Do we need more communication in our organizations?
  • Is there a difference between leadership communication and management communication?

In his video, Greg goes on to answer the above questions and then talks about three essential characteristics of every leader’s communication:

  • It must be personal, which means it must speak to our shared values
  • It must be future-oriented, painting the picture of a vision which shows the way to a better tomorrow for us all.
  • It uses stories which allow us to speak from the heart. Storytellingimpacts us, especially ones where each person in the organization sees a starring role for him or herself.

The video is short (5:38) and definitely worth watching. Just click here.
