Speak So People Will Listen

Once again I have a TED Talk to recommend, this time for those of you who wish to be better communicators. And who among us doesn’t wish that? I am not just talking about giving speeches to large audiences, but also for one-to-one dialogues.

I ask you to give Julian Treasure 9 minutes 22 seconds of your time by watching his talk which has already had over 36 million views! In this practical talk, the sound expert demonstrates the how-to's of powerful speaking -- from some handy vocal exercises to tips on how to speak with empathy. A talk that might help the world sound more beautiful.

On his web site www.juliantreasure.com, he says:

“We teach our children how to read and write, but not how to speak and listen. Listening is untaught and usually unpractised. Our amazing human voice is marginalised as we communicate more and more through text, not spoken word.

Listening is the doorway to understanding. It is crucial for the survival of democracy and civil society. Powerful speaking liberates us to make a difference and be known for who we are. My vision is to transform the world by inspiring people to listen consciously and speak powerfully.”

Treasure has written two books, Sound Business in 2006 and How to Be Heard in 2017.

Pay close attention to the talk and have paper and pen handy to write down some of his tips.
