The Secret to Inspiring Others

“A job title does not make a leader inspirational.” So writes Susan M. Heathfield in her article on this topic. She talks about several factors which motivate employees and followers to be inspired. They include:

  • Passion

  • Listening

  • Inclusion

  • Integrity and Trust

Her article is worth a read at https://www.thebalancecareers.com/leadership-inspiration-1918611

While her observations are on target, however, I did not get excited (inspired) about the topic until I viewed Simon Sinek’s TED Talk on the subject.

One of America’s most prolific writers of books on aspects of leadership also produces many of the most-watched TED Talks. If you wonder what generates success in business or motivating people to take up a cause, Simon’s TED Talk on “How Great Leaders Inspire Action” is a must-watch. He uses examples ranging from Apple to Dr. Martin Luther King to explain the often misunderstood and missing element in motivating people to do things as diverse as buying products or taking up a political cause.

Start putting the “why” first and see what happens to your interactions.
